As the British only 'discovered' Australia in 1770, you might consider Australia to be a young nation. But when you uncover the facts about the Indigenous Australians, you might change your mind. In fact, they were thought to have arrived in Australia nearly 50,000 years ago from South East Asia.
When you look at Australia on a world map, it looks small. Many tourists often think they will be able to get from the east coast to the west coast in a day's drive. The reality is that Australia is the sixth largest country in the world, but it also has the lowest population density in the world with only two people per square kilometre. The typical funny question of a Tourist in Sydney is if they can visit Uluru on the afternon :-) Flight alone to Alice Spring take about 4 1/2 hours. From there you fly another 1 1/2 hours to Uluru.
Australia is one of the driest country as well. Nature has such extremes here. A couple of years it is just dry and then we have a massive rains and floods the years after. The same thing can happend to temperatures. In January 19, 2013 we had the hottest temperature recorded in Sydney, above 45.8 Celcius.

With a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures due to migration and our indigenous Australians, Australia is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse societies in the world today. This has helped forge Australia's unique national identity and helped it become one of the most liveable places in the world. At 30 June 2013, 27.7% of the estimated resident population (ERP) was born overseas (6.4 million people).
As of December 2014 the population of Australia is estimated to be 23,691,412. The most highly populated states are New South Wales and Victoria. Their respective capital cities, Sydney and Melbourne, are the largest cities in Australia. Australia has the lowest population density in the world - only two people per square kilometre. The population is concentrated along the coastal regions of Australia.
